Dark-winged beetle

If you had told me 10 years ago that on a humid day in June, I would nurse a sick beetle back from the dead, I'd never have believed you. And yet, that is exactly what I did today. Here are the photos to prove it:

Wow! I would have never predicted that either. I am assuming this was a beloved "pet" of one of your kids.

we kill a beetle a day at our house.

so are you going to tell us why you choose to celebrate the life of this beetle?

Yeah I am confused. Is S out of town, the "animal lover" [the ONLY animal lover] in the immediate and extended family?

all right... there have been so many questions, perhaps i should do another post. but here is the deal: this was a class project for S. they were each given 2 larvae, and one of hers hadn't hatched by the time she was leaving for sweden. we had our neighbor take over watching, and it hatched at 5 pm the day she left.

the neighbor brought it over the next morning, saying it had died. they had put steel cut oats instead of the regular kind of oatmeal, so we wondered if that was the problem. i was sad, because we had promised S we would email her pictures once it hatched. she's so desperate for a pet she'll take anything ,even a beetle. then C saw some movement, so we put in a small piece of apple, and before we knew it, the beetle had clamped on. apparently, it was just sleeping. so we let it eat and then released it.

a miracle!
