1.20.09

Have you seen these?

Now, I've never been a big fan of W. I didn't vote for him the 2nd time (unlike some people I know), and I realize he's made mistakes while in office. But this? It feels a lot like scapegoating to me. I don't think he can shoulder ALL the blame for the mess our country is in right now.

But that's not my point.

I was driving behind a car that had one of these stickers on it yesterday. And I feel I must vent a bit... in typical Lewis list form:

1. Why on earth would you put such a time-sensitive bumper sticker on your car? It's like when I see people drive by with Kerry-Edwards stickers on the rear of their automobiles. Do we even remember who those guys were by now? I mean, come on.

2. Why would you put a STICKER on your car to begin with? Who spends 20-40 K on something, and then goobs it up with stickers that cost $1.50? When I inherited the Chevy Citation from Laura in 1990, that thing was a piece. My dear friend Kristin suggested we snazz it up a bit with some bumper stickers, or maybe by paint splattering it. Even at the tender age of 16, I knew that would make the car worse, not better.

3. And if you are going to put a bumper sticker on your car (I'm sure some of you have, and when my daughter is on the honor roll there's a good chance I'll throw caution to the wind and stick one on myself), wouldn't you TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE SURE IT WAS CENTERED AND PUT ON STRAIGHT? The car I was behind had just haphazardly stuck the 1.20.09 sticker up, in the general vicinity of the trunk lock and at about a 37 degree angle. Are you kidding me? I was so distracted by the unevenness of it all, I nearly ran a red light.

Can you hear me sighing over the internet???

Sara,

This is Liz (Greenwood) Strong. I totally agree!!! Bumper stickers are the worst. There are some I actually laugh at, but would NEVER put one on a car. Most just annoy me. I agree the time sensitive ones are probably the worst, but a close second has to be the ever favorite in Utah - "A womans place is in the mall." AARG!

I have one bumper sticker on my car, and I deeply regret it. "Mary Jane" dedicated to my favorite snowboard mountain in Colorado.

Instead of paying homage to snowboarding, everyone just thinks I smoke pot.

It won't come off.

Hooray, Kuddos, You Rock, I agree, concur, AMEN, Absolutely, Finally you have addressed something that is one of my all time highest and most poignant pet peeves. I notice bumperstickers even more because I notice them more as I run by cars. I have a good amount of time to read them becauase I am running so slowly. The first thing I think of is "why would anyone put that on their car" It is kind of how I feel about tatoos. Why get something so permanent like "I love Johnny" that you will most absolutely regret [even if you won't admit it]

This life is so time sensitive, we change how we dress, think, what we eat [even though in Kathleen's mind if you once liked something, you can't change or there is something wrong in the cosmos. Creme de menthye brownies come to mind]

But bumper stickers are the all time worst. They cheapen a car. Who is/was Ross Perot? DId he even get to the convention? If you have strong feelings about a particular cause DO something/act instead of just applying a sticker to your wheels.

Again, I really applaud this post AND to get a comment by Liz Strong is saying something.

Okay, Laura, it's not that amazing that I commented. It's more I am blog illiterate. Name/URL what? OpenID? I can text and email with the best of them, but this blogging stuff is new to me. Did you forget I'm old.

I.HATE.BUMPER.STICKERS.

But--
I totally laugh at the funny ones. I'm with you on the Kerry/Edwards thing. I see them all the time around the neighborhood.

I don't even like putting the parking permit stickers on my car. What if they don't come off?
